The Science Behind It

How Red Light
Therapy Works

It's not magic — it's biology. Here's what actually happens when you step under the panel.

Where It Starts

Your cells have an energy problem.
Light helps fix it.

Every cell in your body contains mitochondria — the structures responsible for converting fuel into usable energy. That energy, in the form of a molecule called ATP, powers everything: tissue repair, collagen production, immune response, inflammation regulation. When your mitochondria are working well, your body recovers faster, looks better, and feels more capable. When they're not, things slow down.

Red and near-infrared light therapy works by delivering specific wavelengths of light directly to those mitochondria. When the right wavelengths hit the right receptors, ATP production increases, oxidative stress drops, and a cascade of cellular repair processes kick into a higher gear. The science term for this is photobiomodulation — but the plain-English version is simpler: your cells absorb the light and use it to do their jobs better.

No heat. No UV. No needles. Just light at the wavelengths your biology already knows how to respond to.

Two Wavelengths, Two Jobs

660nm and 850nm.
Here's what each one does.

Not all wavelengths of light do the same thing. The two we use — 660nm red light and 850nm near-infrared — were chosen because they're the most extensively studied and clinically validated wavelengths in photobiomodulation research. Each one targets a different depth of tissue, which means they work together rather than duplicating each other.

660nm

Red Light

Penetration depth: 1–3mm · Surface tissue

Red light at 660nm sits at the far visible end of the spectrum — you can see it glowing. It works closest to the surface, where the skin's fibroblast cells live. Fibroblasts are the cells that produce collagen and elastin, and when they absorb red light, they become significantly more active.

The result is increased collagen synthesis, faster skin cell turnover, reduced redness and inflammation at the surface level, and improved overall skin tone and texture. It's the wavelength most associated with visible skin improvements — and it's the one that tends to show results fastest.

  • Collagen and elastin production
  • Skin repair and surface healing
  • Reduced fine lines and acne scarring
  • Improved skin tone and texture
  • Surface-level inflammation reduction
850nm

Near-Infrared Light

Penetration depth: 5–10mm+ · Deep tissue

Near-infrared at 850nm is invisible to the eye — you won't see a glow, but it's reaching places red light can't. At this depth, it's interacting with muscle tissue, tendons, joints, and even nerves. The mitochondria in those deeper tissues absorb the light and respond the same way: more ATP, less oxidative stress, faster repair.

This is why near-infrared is the wavelength most relevant for athletes, people with joint pain, and anyone dealing with chronic inflammation or old injuries. The skin barely registers it — the action is happening several centimeters below the surface.

  • Deep muscle recovery and repair
  • Joint pain and stiffness relief
  • Chronic inflammation reduction
  • Improved circulation in deep tissue
  • Nerve function support
During Your Session

What's actually happening,
minute by minute.

A session is simple on the surface — you stand or lie under the panel, the light runs, you walk out. But a lot is happening at the cellular level the entire time. Here's the sequence.

01

Light Penetrates the Tissue

The moment the panel activates, photons of red and near-infrared light begin passing through your skin. Red light reaches the surface layers — epidermis and upper dermis — while near-infrared goes deeper into muscle, fat, and joint tissue. There's no heat in the damaging sense, no UV, no sensation beyond a mild warmth.

02

Mitochondria Absorb the Photons

Inside your cells, a protein called cytochrome c oxidase — part of the mitochondrial respiratory chain — absorbs the incoming photons. This is the key step. When cytochrome c oxidase absorbs red or near-infrared light, it triggers a significant increase in ATP production. More ATP means more energy available for every cellular process that follows.

03

Nitric Oxide Is Released

A side effect of mitochondrial light absorption is the release of nitric oxide — a molecule that normally builds up and blocks mitochondrial function when you're under stress or inflammation. Light therapy disperses it. This frees up the mitochondria to work more efficiently and improves blood flow in the treated area, which means more oxygen and nutrients reaching the tissue that needs repair.

04

Repair Processes Accelerate

With ATP production up and blood flow improved, your cells shift into a higher gear. Collagen production increases in skin fibroblasts. Muscle cells begin repairing micro-tears faster. Inflammatory signaling gets modulated — not suppressed, but properly regulated. The body is doing what it always does; it's just doing it faster and more efficiently than it would on its own.

05

The Work Continues After You Leave

The session ends, but the cellular response doesn't. The repair and regeneration processes triggered by the light continue for hours afterward. This is why some people feel a noticeable difference the same day — and why the effects of regular sessions compound over time. Each visit builds on the last.

06

Results Build with Consistency

One session moves the needle. Consistent sessions move it significantly further. Whether you're coming in for skin health, recovery, pain management, or general wellness, the benefits of photobiomodulation are cumulative — each session builds on the biological groundwork laid by the previous one.

In the Room

What the session
actually feels like.

People often expect red light therapy to feel like something — a tingle, a buzz, some sign that something's happening. Most are surprised by how calm it is. The panel emits a deep red glow. There's a mild, pleasant warmth — less than sitting in the sun — and no sound, no vibration, no discomfort.

You can stand or lie down, depending on what you're targeting. Our full-body panel allows up to 15 minutes per side — so you can address both your front and back in a single visit. For targeted concerns, our handheld localized device lets our team direct the light exactly where you need it.

Most clients find the experience genuinely relaxing. A few quiet minutes of stillness that's also doing something productive. You'll walk out feeling like you did something good for yourself — because you did.

Targeted Benefits

What people come in to treat.

Photobiomodulation has a wide range of applications — and that's not marketing language, it's a reflection of how foundational cellular energy is to nearly everything the body does. When your cells are working better, a lot of things improve.

Muscle Recovery

Near-infrared light accelerates repair of muscle micro-tears, reduces post-workout soreness, and helps you return to full capacity faster. Ideal before or after training.

Chronic Pain & Joint Relief

Deep tissue near-infrared reaches joints, tendons, and nerves — reducing inflammation and stiffness at the source rather than masking the surface symptoms.

Skin Health & Collagen

660nm red light stimulates fibroblasts to produce more collagen and elastin — reducing fine lines, improving skin tone, and speeding up healing from acne or sun damage.

Energy & Overall Wellness

When mitochondria produce more ATP, the downstream effects are broad — better sleep quality, improved mood, more sustained energy throughout the day, and a general sense of being more recovered.
